Hi and thanks for taking the time to visit my website, I really appreciate it. I absolutely love being an illustrator, it’s my dream job and I feel thankful everyday. Here’s a short summary of the things that inspire me and how I work.

My inspiration

Like a lot of creatives, I get my inspiration from pretty much everything and ideas can pop into my head at the most random times. That said, for commercial projects I have to be mindful of time and budgets, so I’ve come to learn over the years what things help me generate ideas more successfully. A comfy chair, good music and sometimes even a change of scenery such as a coffee shop help. Although I do acknowledge that sometimes it can feel forced. When that happens there’s no point trying to fight it so I just go and do something completely unrelated to work.

My process

All of my illustrations start life as a sketch, which I create with either good old fashioned pencil and paper or my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil which I love! This allows me to experiment with lots of compositions and colours quickly, without getting too focused on the details. Once I’ve worked out a composition I’m happy with I start to build it in Adobe Illustrator, I then bring the vector artwork into Photoshop to add texture and harmonise the colours.

I really like to incorporate light and shadows in my work and I love the challenge of working out where a cast-shadow should sit. A sense of scale or perspective gets me quite excited too. I love soft colours and experimenting with gradients and blend modes to create interesting colour harmonies.

I used to be an engineer

It’s true, this time 8 years ago I was a telecoms engineering manager looking after T-Mobile and Three UK’s networks. It’s a long story, but one that I feel quite passionate about.
